What is Self Care?
Highlighted in the NHS plan as a building block for a patient centred health service, the principles of Self Care are widely used in public and private sectors throughout the UK.
Self Care is essentially the promotion and enabling of individuals to take personal responsibility for their own health, extending to all aspects of daily life:
A key strategy in the Government's welfare reform agenda is to improve the health and well-being of the working population. The following paper (by the Department of Health, Department for Work & Pensions and HSE) focuses on preventative measures for employee illness, demonstrating the importance of the topic and the relevance for Self Care within organisations today:
Health, work and well-being - Caring for the future
(Government Paper ©2005, Abode Acrobat™ Format)
"Enthusiastic people are the ones who actually get things done in this world. Enthusiasm is what turns any idea into reality. And enthusiasm is linked closely with happiness." : Your Personal Survival Guide To The 21st Century" by Roy Sheppard (1998)
Self Care for the Workplace
The promotion of Self Care in the workplace proactively minimises preventable absenteeism, maximises employee motivation and in turn loyalty. Self Care in the workplace assists:
- Employees in managing minor health problems in work via systems to identify the causes of re-occurring illnesses and access to schemes such as screening programmes.
- Employees in avoiding work-related health problems via lifestyle assessment and managing the engagement of working practices that can contribute to illness.
To enable employees to grasp and practice the philosophy of taking responsibility for their health and productivity as part of a team, simple health knowledge is required and assumed. A significant proportion of the UK population do not possess a basic understanding of how to look after the human body and decipher warning signs regarding general health.
What we do
"Problems cannot be solved by thinking within the framework in which they were created." : Scientist Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
We can successfully implement a policy and it's supporting processes to achieve the philosophy of Self Care within your organisation. We also take care of the communication and education pivotal to it's success.
The 'Health and Wellbeing' Government paper concludes that involving all stakeholders is critical to the success of improving health in the workplace. Stakeholders include employers, employees and health workers.
The introduction and preservation of Self Care is a large, consuming task for management and/or a Human Resources team to plan, educate, communicate and deploy. We will provide the framework and activities to make this happen with minimal interference to the daily running of your company. Let us take away the pressure and deliver the results by:
- Implementing an enterprise wide Self Care policy and supporting processes
- Delivering and facilitating training on the benefits of Self Care in your organisation
- Delivering and facilitating workshop sessions on the basic principles and methodologies of adopting the Self Care approach to your employees
- Providing one-to-one coaching with employees
- Delivering workshops and group facilitation on specific health, lifestyle and nutritional topics
- Offering virtual coaching for employees via email and/or telephone
Quantifiable Benefits of Self Care in the Workplace
Workplace general wellness via Self Care is a policy that really works. Results from US companies, shown below, will prompt you to consider investing in your most important asset -your employees and the outcome this can have on your bottom line.
"Du Pont saw that each dollar invested in workplace health promotion yielded $1.42 over two years in lower absenteeism costs at Du Pont Co. (Well Workplace Gold in Delaware). Absences from illness unrelated to the job among 45,000 blue-collar workers dropped 14% at 41 industrial sites where the health promotion program was offered, compared with a 5.8% decline at 19 sites where it was not." : The Wellness Council of America
The Stay Alive & Well program at Reynolds Electrical & Engineering Company, based in Las Vegas, cost $76.24 per employee during the two years it has been in operation. Over half of the 1,600 employees participated (with up to 80% participation rates in the intervention program). Participants significantly lowered cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and weight and experienced 21% lower lifestyle-related claim costs than non-participant. Resulting savings: $127.89 per participant with a benefit to cost ratio of 1.68 to 1. : The Wellness Council of America
